24 Hours in Athens

I arrived in sunny Athens and rather bizarrely we didn’t have to go through passport control. I taxied to my hotel in an upscale neighbourhood of Athens. My room wasn’t ready so I decided to stroll around Athens and see what I could see. I’d been here before, but it’s a big city with lots to investigate. I decided I could knock a few more things off the list.

I found the Temple of Hephaestus, the Greek God who doesn’t get much of a mention. He’s had two from me now. A few churches followed, some old looking things, and a man in his pants.

In the evening I caught up with John and Sam again. They’re hell bent on spending their honeymoon with us! Skopelos, Skiathos, Volos, Thessaloniki, and now Athens.

The next morning I left at 7 o’clock to climb Lycabettus Hill which has commanding views over the city. It was quite the climb and a good workout, but well worth it. I witnessed two soldiers do the flag raising ceremony when the sun came up. An interesting spectacle. John and Sam came a little later with Dimitra.

Then it was checking out of my 17th hotel in 23 days. Off to Piraeus to board the Holland America Oosterdam for ten days around the eastern Mediterranean.
